Here at CURRENTBODY, we often get asked about whether or not the Clarisonic can be used by people with acne, so we’ve put together this post to explain exactly how this nifty device can help with your skin problems.

What is acne?

Before explaining how the Clarisonic can help with acne, it’s important to first understand what causes the problem. Acne occurs when pores become blocked, this happens because the skin at the top of your pores thickens and combines with dead skin cells, which are then shed back into the pores. This can also cause the appearance of black heads and white heads. Severe acne occurs when bacteria develop in trapped sebum under the skin, causing red spots, nodules and even cysts.

Can I use the Clarisonic if I have acne?

Clarisonics use patented micro-massage motion to work with your skin’s elasticity, taking care of even the most sensitive of complexions. The oscillations gently lift impurities like oil, pollutants and bacteria out of your skin (like the one that causes acne to begin with), unblocking your pores and ridding your skin of blackheads. To demonstrate how kind the Clarisonic is to skin, tests have been conducted whereby the device is used on tights and rose petals – the tights don’t rip or ladder and the rose petals don’t move an inch! It's had great reviews from acne sufferers...

The Clarisonic currently has a 4/5 rating on acne.org with users quoting: “After using my Clarisonic x2 daily for two months my skin is noticeably clear and I have Clarisonic to thank for that!” “I bought my Clarisonic over a year ago at my dermatologist's office and have since been loving it.” “I can't live w/o my Clarisonic. I use it daily because I have oily skin.”

I've tried it, but I think it made my skin worse...

A common result of using the Clarisonic for the first time is to go through ‘The Purge’. This is basically the stage where all the bacteria and other unwelcome bits and pieces under your skin come to the surface, ready to escape and leave you with clear skin! This often appears as spots or redness, but once you battle through this short stage it will all be worth it. Many people do not experience this at all when using the device.

Which Clarisonic is best for acne?

The actual Clarisonic device you use won’t be the factor that makes a difference, it’s the brush head you need to consider. The Mia 2, Aria and Plus all come with a sensitive brush head, which can be fine for many users. If you feel your skin is particularly sensitive, the Cashmere Cleanse Luxe brush heads is perfect, thanks to their longer bristles and polished ends.

How do I use the Clarisonic if I have acne?

If you have acne, it’s important to use the Clarisonic on the lowest possible speed on the shortest timed setting at first, to allow your skin to get used to it. Many people use their Clarisonic every day, but we’d advise to only use it 2-3 times a week if you have acne.

As a teenager I felt so lucky, all the kids around me were getting spots and it just never seemed to happen to me, I put it down to good genes at the time (thanks Mum). It wasn’t until I turned 23 that I started to notice unusual red bumps and instant scars on my cheeks and jaw line. A month or so later I visited my doctor, who informed me I had adult acne. He prescribed some Acnecide 5% cream and sent me on my way, but I didn’t put too much faith in it. Instead I decided to trial a Clarisonic, and now I’m so glad I did. At night I would take off my make up, use my Clarisonic with the refreshing gel cleanser on a low speed for 1 minute, then apply the Acnecide cream. Because the device left my skin so fresh, the cream was absorbed really well and really took effect, as the Clarisonic had lifted all the bacteria out. Now, 3 months later, my skin is back to normal and I have Clarisonic to thank. I still use my device every day, and my face just doesn't feel clean without it!
