Living with Psoriasis - Treatment and Triggers

For Psoriasis Awareness Month, we’re talking about what it’s like to live with this skin condition. Living with Psoriasis shouldn’t drastically alter your life and there are some award-winning devices that could help you manage your symptoms easier. If you want to know what things might trigger a Psoriasis outbreak or Psoriasis treatments we recommend, read on.

What is Psoriasis?

According to the NHS, “Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales.” Most medical professionals think that Psoriasis is caused by an issue with the immune system where your body makes too many skin cells then attacks them.

There is no cure for Psoriasis. But, there is a range of treatments including ointments, salves, baths and creams for people living with Psoriasis. But light therapy or phototherapy is considered the most effective treatment for severe cases. If you suffer from Psoriasis, you’ll have it your whole life but some flare-ups may be worse than others.

Common Psoriasis triggers

You may have no symptoms for years and years but then interact with a trigger to cause an outbreak. According to the Mayo Clinic, “common triggers include:

  • Infections, such as strep throat or skin infections
  • Weather, especially cold, dry conditions
  • Injury to the skin, such as a cut or scrape, a bug bite, or a severe sunburn
  • Stress
  • Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Certain medications — including lithium, high blood pressure medications and antimalarial drugs
  • Rapid withdrawal of oral or systemic corticosteroids”

How having Psoriasis can make you feel

Many people struggle with their self-image after being diagnosed with Psoriasis. Learning you’ll be living with Psoriasis forever can feel overwhelming. Sufferers may feel they need to hide the scaly patches or that others will not find them attractive anymore. But Psoriasis doesn’t mean you’re dirty or infectious.

According to Psoriasis.org, “One thing we do know: psoriasis is not contagious. You cannot catch psoriasis from another person.” But that’s often small comfort for people worried about bikini season or hiding an outbreak in photos. That’s why we recommend a range of red light therapy devices to help you treat your Psoriasis.

Red light therapy uses light-emitting diodes (LED) to heal the skin with specific UV wavelengths. So, you may experience shorter outbreaks that are less severe over time. It can also help heal scars you already have.

Affordable, portable skin-clearing wand: CurrentBody skin LED Precision

This small, handheld device looks like a remote and is just perfect for Psoriasis outbreaks in small, stubborn patches on the body and face. It’s proven and trusted by customers and celebs alike including skincare expert & YouTube sensation Wayne Goss. He said, “It's a very affordable option into LED technology which lets you tackle specific problem areas.” And at £99, we agree.

Charlotte, a CurrentBody customer, team member and Psoriasis sufferer said, “I now feel more confident in wearing shorts and dresses and I don’t feel as sad or down about it and not only has it cleared the external area, but I feel like helped with the problem under the skin as no longer itchy as it was. I HIGHLY recommend any fellow psoriasis suffers to PLEASE buy one of these devices and it will not only clear the affected area it will also make you feel so much better mentally as you will not be embarrassed about this horrible affliction your skin, I know I do! However, at , it is now on my face - quite extensively too along with mild Rosacea. I take great care of my skin and always have so I really tried to control it with quality, gentle creams but to no avail. It’s four times the price of a LED mask - but oh it is truly worth it - my skin is now clear and soft and smooth. My skin was clear after the first continuous 12 days of use and now I top up every two or three days - and it's still clear."
